Knit A Yoke
Presented at our August 2007 meeting by Barbara Meloy
This pattern is based on the following gauge: Gauge 7 sts, 10 rows/inch
This technique is based on Joyce Schneider's work, with a simplified method of decreasing which is much faster.
CO 198 stitches with waste yarn. Knit 5 to 8 rows.
Knit 1 row ravel cord.
"E" wrap main color over all needles.
Knit 1 row main color.
Knit 1 row main color while setting fair-isle.
Knit until first row without fair-isle.
Decrease evenly across with garter bar: hang 3-prong tool on left needles 2 and 1 and right needle 1; put all stitches to the right on the garter bar; rehang 1 stitch on the left, then rehang 8 stitches starting with right needle 2. Continue decreasing in groups of 8 stitches, doubling the first on the last needle of the previous group. 9 stitches in the last group. Rehang the 3-prong tool on left needle 1 and right needles 1 and 2. Decrease the left side like the right. End needles are number 87, left and right.
Knit evenly in pattern until the next non-fair-isle row.
Decrease evenly across as before, in groups of 6, last group is 7 stitches. End needles are 63.
Knit evenly in pattern until next non-fair-isle row.
Decrease evenly across as before, in groups of 4, last group is 5 stitches. End needles are 48.
Knit evenly in fair-isle until end of pattern.
Knit 1 row main color.
Decrease evenly across row, from end to end, with 3-prong tool, in groups of 3 stitches for small and medium; groups of 4 stitches for large and extra large; groups of 5 stitches for 2XX and 3 XX. End needles 33, 36 or 39.
Remove on 4 to 7 rows of waste yarn.
Make a second piece like the first.
Block flat, in a curved shape, with straight edges (shoulder seams) in a line with the lines on the blocking board.
Make a 1X1 rib neckband of 131 stitches, needles 66-65 for small and medium; 143 stitches, needles 72-71 for large and extra large; or 155 stitches for 2XX and 3XX, needles 78-77.
Remove on a garter bar.
Rehang neck stitches, right side facing you, doubling the stitches on left needle 1.
Pull needles to hold, yoke pieces behind latches.
Rehang neckband in latches. Close latches. Using garter bar, push all needles back at once.
Hang original edge of neckband (EON is enough).
Knit 1 row from left to right.
Bind off loosely around gate pegs.
